(We were renting and the owner lived out of town and he wasn’t sure what he was going to do.) It took almost a month before we reached a settlement and the amount was extremely low considering all we had lost however, there was nothing we could do at that point. We had to stay in a hotel (because our house was uninhabitable) until we could find a new home. We compared it to the list we had made and couldn’t believe we had forgotten so many items. When we got the first draft, we were shocked – a lot of items were missing and the estimate was low.

We had a 55” TV and it was only 1½” tall after the fire, so I couldn’t “see” the TV as it was.) She told me to work on our list some more and she would use what she had to start our settlement list. (In my defense, I could only visualize the house after the fire. – but I forgot our television! She asked me about it and I felt like a fool for not remembering something that obvious. So, I started in the living room – recliners, couch, end tables, entertainment center, game consoles, etc. She told me to think about it and let her know when I had a list for her. When our agent asked me for my list, I had to tell her that it was in the house. Not an easy task to do when everything is calm, much less after your world has been turned upside down and you’re an emotional wreck. If you do not have one, you will have to write everything down - from memory. Then they’ll ask you for a list of the items that were damaged or destroyed. Next, they’ll want to schedule a walk-through of the property and take a lot of pictures, all the while asking you a lot of questions. When you contact your insurance agent to report the fire, the first thing they should ask is, “Is everyone okay?”. Now what? A traumatic and devastating event has just occurred and you feel like you’re on an emotional rollercoaster. Then you realize that all of your important papers were in the house. Then reality sets in and everyone is asking you questions. All you can say is, “This can’t be happening!” (I’m sure you used to say, “That will never happen to me!”)
